Avoid Overload: Learn in Small Chunks

When it comes to language, less is more if it helps you focus. Don’t try to cram 50 new words or multiple grammar rules in a single sitting – that’s a recipe for overload. Cognitive research shows that working memory can only handle so much new information at once.


Even adult learners have a limit of around 5–7 new items they can reliably retain at one time . If you go beyond that, your retention drops and learning becomes inefficient. Instead, break your learning into bite-sized chunks. For example, focus on 5 new words and practice them in sentences, or learn one grammar pattern and use it until it feels comfortable.


By respecting your brain’s natural limits, you’ll actually learn faster. Small, digestible lessons also keep you from feeling overwhelmed and help maintain consistency.
